Abstract :
Introduction- ? Violence against women- an act of gender-based violence that results in, or is likely to result in, physical, sexual, or mental harm or suffering to women, including threats of such acts, coercion, or arbitrary deprivation of liberty, whether occurring in private or public life. Aims/objectives- The study aimed to look into the magnitude of sexual violence among married women in a low-resource setting. Materials/ Methods ? ? A cross-sectional study of 1000 women was conducted in rural institutions in Central India. ? Study subjects - married women, who had reported to gynecological outpatient for some ailments or as friends or relatives of patients, mostly from villages, representing communities around. ? The social worker interviewed them using a pre-designed questionnaire in the local language. Their answers were recorded and analyzed. Results ? Out of 1000 women, 352 suffered sexual violence, 648 experienced no violence. Majority- 56% were in the age group of 20-29. Violence was most commonly seen in housewives. 85% did not seek help after facing abuse or didn?t know the means to seek help. Gender violence is now recognized as an important cause of injury and ill health. It is a grave public health and humans rights issue. The health sector has a strategic position to identify women who suffer domestic violence. This provides a window of opportunity to address the needs of abused women. If health workers understand how violence affects women's health and their capacity to make decisions, will they be able to give better services. Conclusions- A holistic approach should be taken by- Change social norms ? Educate children, and young people on social skills ? Involve men in violence prevention campaigns ? Create awareness ? work together to change the cultural mindset against women. ? Increase women?s participation at all levels. ? Gender budgeting and gender mainstreaming within State agencies and civil society organizations
