Abstract :
INTRODUCTION Cerebral venous thrombosis is one of the most frequent cause of stroke in young adults although it is a rare disorder. It usually has a serious emergency manifestation during pregnancy and postpartum but, is frequently under diagnosed. AIM This poster aims to highlight the clinical presentation, diagnosis and management of postpartum cerebral venous sinus thrombosis. The objective is to improve understanding of CVT, its early identification and treatment. CASE REPORT We report the case of a 23 years old female, with para 2 living 1 who presented to the emergency department on her 5th day postpartum, having symptoms of confusion and severe headaches for the last two days. After one day, she also developed weakness in the left side of her body. An urgent NCCT brain was performed that revealed venous sinus thrombosis causing venous congestion. Anti coagulant LMW Enoxaparin was started and patient shifted to neurology ward from where she was discharged after one week. RESULTS The incidence of CVT in our country is 2/100,000/year. Usually the CVT cases appeared during the postpartum period. None of the cases presented with CVT during pregnancy. CVT is uncommon illness that has a critical outcome. Symptoms of CVT appeared in the first three weeks postpartum in most cases, with severe headaches being the most common complaint. Treatment of CVT emphasises anticoagulation and symptoms management to prevent neuronal complications and death. CONCLUSION Cerebral venous sinus thrombosis and postpartum eclampsia might have similar manifestations in patients of reproductive age. Prompt diagnosis and therapeutic intervention can prevent neurological deterioration and immediately improve the patient. KEYWORDS Cerebral venous thrombosis, severe headache, CVT.
