Abstract :
Introduction: Eisenmenger syndrome (ES) is a congenital heart defect characterised by right-to-left or bidirectional shunting with severe pulmonary hypertension. Women with ES have poor tolerance of pregnancy-related physiological changes. Maternal mortality rate ranges from 20% to 50%. Aim & Objectives: To study the maternal and perinatal outcomes in women with Eisenmenger syndrome at our institute. Material & Methods: A ten-year data was reviewed retrospectively and records of three such women were found who delivered at our institute and studied in detail for feto-maternal outcomes. Results: Out of three cases, two patients had an underlying atrial septal defect and one had a ventricular septal defect. All patients were presented in NYHA Class IV and exhibited symptoms of congestive heart failure, necessitating admission to the intensive care unit. Regarding obstetric outcomes, two developed fetal growth restriction, all three had preterm deliveries, two were delivered by LSCS and one through vaginal delivery. All three neonates were low birth weight and required neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) admission. No maternal or perinatal mortality was reported. Conclusion: Pregnancy should ideally be avoided in a woman with Eisenmenger syndrome. Multidisciplinary team management is the key to a better pregnancy outcome.
